BARBARA A. BURR

EXPERIENCE
Barb has many years of experience representing men and women in all aspects of domestic relations law, from divorce and custody to property distribution and financial support. Her practice is client-focused, emphasizing family-friendly approaches that minimize conflict and help clients move forward with their lives in the most positive way possible. She has served as Collaborative counsel, negotiated amicable resolutions, drafted marital settlement agreements, and litigated on behalf of hundreds of people. Barb is licensed to practice in DC and Maryland.
 
Also a trained mediator, Barb frequently serves in that capacity in family-law proceedings. As a former Certified Public Accountant, as well, she brings exceptional financial expertise and dispute resolution skills to family law matters.

COMMITMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS
As founding president of the DC Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Barb one of the pioneers of Collaborative Practice in the DC area. Also a founding member of the Collaborative Practice Training Institute, Barb trains others in collaborative practice and conflict resolution. She also lectures frequently in a variety of venues on family law issues, collaborative law, and mediation. Barb co-founded two non-profit organizations, the Collaborative Project of DC and the Collaborative Project of Maryland, which strive to bring the benefits ofCollaborative Practice to families of low and modest means.
 
Barb co-founded and helps run Third Thursdays, a free divorce workshop and has served as an instructor for the District of Columbia Bar Association’s Pro Se Divorce Clinic and as a family law expert at the Family Law Self-Help Center. She is a former Treasurer and was a long time Board member of the District of Columbia Women’s Bar Association. She is a member of the family law sections of the District of Columbia Bar Association and the Bar Association of Montgomery County.
 
A Senior Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice earlier in her career, Ms. Burr has extensive trial experience. She has served as co-counsel in groundbreaking civil rights cases before the United States Supreme Court and as adjunct professor of law at American University.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Ms. Burr received her law degree with honors from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Washington, where she was also a Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma honor society member. She also received certification as a CPA. She clerked for the Honorable Judith Rogers, then Chief Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and is admitted to practice in DC and Maryland.

Erin C. Golding

EXPERIENCE
Erin joined the Burr Law Firm as the 2011-12 Family Law Fellow and has focused her practice on family matters ever since. Erin serves as Collaborative Counsel, negotiates settlements and, when appropriate, litigates on behalf of men and women in divorce, custody, child and spousal support, property distribution, same-sex dissolutions, and other matters involving family disputes. Erin also is appointed by the Court to represent children in custody cases.
 
Erin is a trained mediator who also serves in that capacity in family law matters.
 
Prior to joining the Burr Law Firm, Erin served as a student attorney in the Civil and Family Litigation Clinic, where she represented clients in various domestic relations matters in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia. Erin also served as a Legal Intern at the IRS, the SEC, the US Small Business Administration and Section 27, incorporating the AIDS Law Project in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she researched and analyzed various tax, business and social action issues.

Ms. Golding co-founded and helps run Third Thursdays, a free divorce workshop, and volunteers at the Family Court Self-Help Center at D.C. Superior Court. Ms. Golding received her law degree from the George Washington University Law School, where she was recognized as a Thurgood Marshall Scholar and graduated cum laude, and her bachelor’s degree from Pomona College. Ms. Golding is admitted to practice in DC, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York.

BRANDES S.G. ASH

EXPERIENCE
Brandes’ practice focuses on all areas of family law, including divorce, custody, child and spousal support, property allocation and issues involving same-sex couples. Brandes is a trained Collaborative lawyer as well as a trained mediator and serves in both capacities in family law matters.
 
Prior to joining the Burr Law Firm in 2016, Brandes served for three years as an Assistant Attorney General in the Child Support Division of the Office of the Attorney General, where she focused on establishing and enforcing parentage, child support and medical support orders.
 
COMMITMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS
Brandes is a member of the D.C. Bar Family Law Section Steering Committee member and serves on the Board of the Collaborative Project of DC. She has held several additional leadership positions in local and national professional organizations including: Chief of Communications for the National Bar Association; President of the Greater Washington Area Chapter of the National Bar Association’s Women Lawyers Division; 2nd Vice President of the Washington Bar Association; Chair of the American Bar Association (“ABA”) Family Law Section Child Support Committee; Vice Chair of the ABA Family Law Section Diversity Committee; CLE and Finance Committee Member for the ABA Family Law Section; Liaison to the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity; and Board member, Foundations for Home and Community.  Ms. Ash also served as an inaugural class member of both the D.C. Bar John Payton Leadership Academy and the ABA Family Law Section Diversity Fellowship program. Among other activities, Ms. Ash has also been a longtime volunteer at the D.C. Bar Advice and Referral Clinic.
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Brandes received her law degree from Howard University School of Law, where she served as a founding member and President of the Howard Family Law Society.  She received her MPA from George Mason University and her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Brandes clerked for the Honorable Herman Dawson of the Circuit Court for Prince Georges County, Maryland and is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

ACCOLADES
Brandes was awarded the National Bar Association’s 40 Under 40 Nation’s Best Advocate.
The Young Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association named a leadership and service award after Brandes due to, among other things, her commitment to public service.

JIM COLEMAN

EXPERIENCE
Jim joined the Burr Law Firm as a paralegal in 2016. Jim is often the voice at the other end of the line when calling the Burr Law Firm.  In addition, Jim keeps the trains running on time, organizes documents and information, and ensure that our client’s interests, needs and concerns always come first.
